A few nice things about getting older

At the ripe old age of 27, I have made some observations of things that seem to be getting easier in life rather than harder:

1. Teenagers listen to you more. Or at least they do when they're drunk and you're asking them to keep the party down, go to bed, and get off my lawn!

2. I don't get as embarassed trying new things for the first time and looking like a total fool.

3. My grey streak will kick serious ass when it grows in, and until then, I get to color it sparkly henna red.

4. Letting go of some of the body nonesence. A friend recently asked me if the body image baggage ever goes away. I'm sure some of it remains, but it does seem to get easier in you late twenties. As someone who has particularly memorable teenage experiences of sobbing in dressing rooms (flourescent lights are pure torture), the last few years I'm grown increasingly comfortable in my own skin. We'll see if that holds up as the wrinkles come...

5. Getting to make references to my young adult pop culture, have the references missed completely by my students/younger generation, and then getting to bemoan the state of today's youth/culture to my commrades.

6. Increasingly not getting carded.

There's my answer to body image baggage. As for me I'm 32 and finally beautiful. It took awhile but it's so much more fun than sobbing in the dressing room.
