99 (or less) reasons why 99 bottles pisses me off
When we first moved here, we loved 99. They had great selection, a comfortable and unpretncious atmosphere, and friendly staff. In the last 4 years the place has taken a serious nose dive. They've always been expensive ($4.50/pint; $10-15 for a hamburger), but recently prices have really sky rocketed. Beers are $5:25-5.75 a pint! The local stuff, from the local breweries, some right down the freakin' street, cost the same as an imported beer from the UK? Isn't the whole point of a brewery offering local beer to 1) support local business, and 2) b/c there aren't the same transportation costs you can offer it for less? They still have a great (overpriced) bottle selection (seriously, same stuff at TJ's, 1/2 price), but their draft beers are dominated by overpriced local brews that aren't very good. I know I'm cheap, I'm a grad student, what do you expect, but a pint of Racer5 at 99 bottles is more expensive than a pint of the same beer at the swanky local bar, the 515. To top it off, they were out of 3 of the beers requested, brought L the wrong beer, slow service, flat beer, the list goes on and on. I don't mind paying more for something really good and that I can't get anywhere else. You want to charge me $5.50 a beer? I expect it to be something really good and the atmosphere of the place to be decent - to look like it's been swept in the last 3 decades (If I want to go to a dive I'll go to a dive), and for the beer to be carbonated, on draft if stated to be on draft, and for the one I ordered to arrive. The staff are still nice, if slow and seemingly not beer drinkers themselves, but I'm way over this joint.

I skimmed this until I saw what I was looking for: 'flat beer.' There is no greater crime, and I am SO glad that you reached your limit with 99. Bravo! The crime of 'flat beer' is enough.fff
ReplyDeleteThe 'fff' means nothing.
ReplyDeletethey used to be ok, and we go so rarely that it took us a while to notice how bad it had gotten.
