Post-Conference Flurry

The conference was a blast and my talk went well. i didn't get a lot of questions (as in I got 1) in the Q&A, but a lot of people came up to talk to me after the panel, at drinks, the next morning, etc. I met a bunch of very friendly, smart, and good-looking grads, ate excellent food, drank great wine I could/would never buy myself, and have returned invigorated and inspired. Davis is a beautiful campus (they managed to build with concrete and wood in a way that is warm, modernist, and artsy - rather than soviet-chic) and a really fun little town. Food historians are a very friendly bunch who have been working to get their research validated as real work rather than academic-light. I think it's a mark of my SC experience that I never even stopped to consider food research as academic-light.

I was completely inspired by the diss chapters people presented (chapters, a year from how, really) - and feel simultaneously very behind where they are, and motivated to get cracking. Today I set up my diss research database in Bento (based on Filemaker Pro, but much easier to use, has a nice interface, etc), and am going through one of my published collections of ballads. I also started a book this morning and am hoping to be done with it and my primary work from this collection by the end of this week. This project is bigger than I imagined, and may take more time than I imagined, so it's time I got working. Not that I'm all that eager to rush into the outstanding job market that awaits, but enough procrastinating.

Oh yeah, the hot dog photo went over well and I'm going to try cooking with wattleseed before the week is over.
