It's not just the "old book smell", there's a really musty smell in our library that drives me nuts.
4.75 hours of looking through microfilm. I made it through 3.5 reels today and collected 65 pages worth of printed articles. I really hope I can use it. What I would like to find: detailed descriptions of the Whiteboy Outrages accompanied by pictures. What I am finding: most of the descriptions include the language "lawless and dastardly" to describe the Whiteboys and/or their acts, followed by "committed their usual Outrages/usual acts", and "nary a night is silent with these rogues about." The language is pretty awesome, although low on the details. What happened to sensationalist journalism?
some favourites:
"The White Boys are, if possible, more audacious than ever..."
"We are sorry to acquaint the public, that those riotous people called White Boys, whom we imagined had sufficient sense to repent of their former wicked proceedings, are still so insensible to their own safety, as to begin their usual (can't read word) and unmeaning excursions."
Last note, best music to listen to when sifting through Irish newspapers on microfilm: Flogging Molly, of course.
From Salty Dog:
They threw a rope around yer neck
To watch you dance the jig of death
Then left ya for the starvin' crows
Hoverin' like hungry whores
One flew down plucked out yer eye
The other he had in his sights
Ya snarled at him, said leave me be
I need the bugger so I can see
and Tobacco:
'Twas 1659 forgotten now for sure
They dragged us from our homeland
With the musket and their gun
Cromwell and his roundheads
Battered all we know
Shackled hopes of freedom
We're now but stolen goods
Darken the horizon
Blackened from the sun
This rotten cage of Bridgetown
Is where I now belong
I feel a little like Tweak, getting excited about mentions of Oliver Cromwell (Ollie C?) in my Irish punk.
**To be clear, I couldn't give a flying rat's ass about Oliver Cromwell, it's the incorporation of historical anger, hell, pirates, and getting drunk that really rocks my socks.
**The Dance Hall Crashers is another good choice.
Oh man, I love ridiculous journalism. This post seriously makes me miss spending six+ hours with the B-town (Boston) Gazette. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI also highly approve of "Ollie C" as a nickname :-) especially if it refers to Irish music!
