This should have posted on the 14th, but I forgot about it, so here it is:
For all my Jewish readers: L'Shanah tovah! May you have a sweet and healthy new year! For my non-Jewish readers, Sept 12 marked the beginning of the Jewish New Year. As a perpetual student (with a 4 year hiatus), beginning the new year in the fall just makes a lot of sense. The seasons change, you start your fall quarter/semester, and the cycle goes on. Jan 1 never really did much for me in terms of the new year really feeling like something new and different. Maybe painful and hungover, but not new and different.
Yesterday I also started a new year. 28 years ago, my mom had suffered through 30+ hours of labor and the shining example of humanity that is me, was born. As you can see, I've grown more modest in my old age.
Favourite things about being 28:
-I gain all that much more authority in speaking disparagingly about "today's youth" and my undergrads in particular.
-I like both the number 2 and 8. Nice, even, round numbers.
-Last year was the year I got my MA, this year will be the year I become ABD.
As anyone who has read this blog, or knows me in person, knows: I love food. I love to cook and I love to eat (which is also why I've taught myself to love to run...). For my birthday, L cooked a fabulous meal out of two of my favourite, and tasty, dead creatures: New Orleans style bbq shrimp and steak.
