Non-Angsty Apple Picking!

This weekend L and I drove to Wilcox to check out a local organic orchard. They grow apples, pears, peaches, and a ton of produce from June-Oct. We actually DO grow things here in the desert. Tasty, tasty things. Though most farms require irrigation (although less than you might expect thanks to the monsoons and water reclamation), it's really easy to do organic because you don't need pesticides. Too hot for most bugs, molds, and funguses. Even better, the organically grown produce on these farms is actually less expensive than the stuff at the store. When we lived in SC I loved to get fresh produce from local farms, but simply could not afford the vanity pricing for local, organically grown goods. It always boggled my mind that stuff grown less than a mile from the market was so substantially more expensive than the stuff at the store.

Anyhoo... we had a great time. Don't let the shade fool you, it was probably 95/97F, but still fun. We came home with several pounds of apples and fresh pears. I certainly plan on going back later in the month for veg.

  1. Sounds like fun. And may I say that you and nibbler look absolutely fabulous in that picture?

  2. Thanks! As I said elsewhere, though I scored the jeans for $20 I would have paid $200 because they actually made my thighs look nice. The day trip was a lot of fun and I'm definitely looking forward to pumpkin patching next fall.

  3. I totally agree that you and Nibbler look fabulous! We had great peaches this year - better than the last 3 years. The apple story this year is very sad. I think there is only one half-eaten apple left. Are the big black crows eating them?
