Rent in SC

I often complain about the rent and cost of living in SC. And I know I'm a broken record about it, but I got this ad on my grad list this morning and I think it demonstrates my frustration with living here:

"a beautiful studio for rent on the Westside close to Mission St. The studio is brand new, with skylights, great windows, high ceilings, a nice bathroom, and kitchen area with a stove and oven. It is situated in a lovely garden, and is completely separate from the main house where the friendly and considerate landlords live. The space is a bit over 300 square ft., and it is for one person. The rent is  $950 a month, including utilities."

Ok, so utilities are included (water/trash/sewage run about $80 but we have a washer and dryer; it's cold here, but not so cold that you run up really high heating bills), but there's no washer and dryer. Yes, it's new (the photo looks like a shed that's been converted) and I'm sure it's lovely - but $950/mo? for 300 sq ft? Ok, you're close to the ocean (w/ water too cold to go in w/o a wet suit)... and that's about it. As fantastic as the nightlife and local Santa Cruz culture is, it ain't no real city like SF or NYC. We were looking for potential new places to live and the number that are listed for between 900-1400 and "suitable for one person only" - which means tiny as fuck- are really mind blowing.
